1. V. Conclusion (13-14)

Matthew Henry

13-14
There are things best left to immediate communication, rather than many letters, and Christian company is gladdening. Those who are good and happy wish the same for others. A friend of religion deserves to be remembered by his co-religionists. We must learn humility as well as love, and even the lowest in the Church ought to be greeted personally and personably.

13
Even with so much more to say, the apostle leaves off in hopes of a coming visit.
14
All goodness, both spiritual and temporal is requested on behalf of Gaius. Those with John desire to be remembered, and John desires to be remembered to those with Gaius.

Barnes

13
As with 2 John, the letter closes in hopes of a coming visit, to which time much discussion is deferred. Perhaps there were things John needed to say that he preferred not to have seen by the wrong eyes. (2Jn 12 - the same considerations expressed.)
14
The greeting sent is from personal friends common to John and Gaius, not of necessity Christians. It is asked that John be remembered personally to each of his acquaintances at Gaius' end.

Wycliffe

13
As the letter was written, there was more John had to say.
14
In recognizing those in Gaius' church 'by name', John seeks to imitate his Savior. (Jn 10:3 - The Good Shepherd calls his sheep by name.)

13
John desires to not write more.
14
They will hopefully speak directly soon. The peace asked is that of a peaceful conscience, good friendship, and a greater glory. Friends are those who hold the highest ground with us, as friendship stands on love, and has the greatest intimacy. Such relationship, Jesus seeks to bring us into with our God and Father. (Jn 15:13-15 - As His friends, we obey His commands as knowing the reasons for them. Jas 2:23 - Abraham, in believing unto righteousness, was called a friend of God.) To ask that he be remembered to each by name, is equivalent to his naming them directly in the letter.

New Thoughts (4/29/00)

Again, Mr. Henry gets to the point that I need to take to heart. I have yet to learn humility, which is largely the whole point of this letter, isn't it? Lord, help me to stop being so selective in my greetings. Help me to embrace my brothers. All of them. This is Your desire isn't it? This is what You ask for today. Help me to obey Your leading.
